Leaders of Oregon is a nomination-based recognition program for exceptional leaders at the University of Oregon. As a member of our campus community, we are kindly requesting that you nominate outstanding students in your department, office or organization.
The Leaders of Oregon program is dedicated to acknowledging those who have made a significant, positive impact on the campus and in the community. If you know a student who demonstrates extraordinary leadership qualities and would like to nominate them for this honor, please consider the following selection criteria: Leaders of Oregon are chosen based on academics, campus involvement, community service, and leadership experiences. We would like to know what sets this nominee apart from other students.
To nominate a student leader, please download and complete the nomination form and submit it to the Holden Leadership Center in person or by e-mail at HLC@uoregon.edu by Friday April 18, 2008 at 5:00pm.
The recipients will be announced on Friday April 25, 2008. A photograph and biography of the Leaders of Oregon recipients will be displayed in the HLC as well as on the HLC website. Additionally, each Leader of Oregon will receive a $20 gift certificate to The Duck Store.
If you have questions about this process please contact me, Dustin Ferguson at dferguso@uoregon.edu or call the Holden Leadership Center at 541.346.1146.
Thank you for your dedication to advancing student leaders at the University of Oregon and we look forward to your nominations!

Being the first ever Leadership VP for the Residence Halls gave me a chance to experience building job from scratch and setting a precedent for future leaders to take up the torch. I learned that leading a group is more about putting the right people into jobs that they will be good at and letting them go rather than managing the entire project and trying to have the final say in every instance.

Working on racial justice and LGBT rights has always been comfortable to me a queer woman of color. About 3 years ago I made a conscious decision to move out of my comfort zone and to do work as an “ally” to disability and immigrant communities. In the last couple of years I feel that I have really grown as someone who strives to practice social justice. I’ve messed up a lot, but I have gained a clearer understanding of what it means to practice multi-issue or intersectional work. I am also glad to have developed patience for other people in their own processes – learning and benefiting from others’ patience with me.

When I came to Oregon I spent quite a lot of time trying to find a place for myself, a place where people believed in something and acted on those beliefs. Now that I’ve found it I’m using my leadership positions to help others find their home away from home.

I served the Mortar Board as an officer this past year, which entailed helping to direct the organization in fulfilling its mission. My main responsibility, besides attending all meetings and volunteer service events, was to plan and implement the annual Junior Scholars Night, which recognizes the top 100 students in the junior class, according to GPA.
My most personally significant leadership experience has been as a leader on my church's annual mission trip to Mexico. I have participated as a high school student for four years, followed by four more years as a college leader. Most recently, I served as a site foreman, leading a team of approximately 20 high school students and adults in the construction of a single home for a Mexican family. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity, not only for the service I can do, but for the relationships I cultivate with high school students who come on the trip, other adults leaders, and the Mexican families we serve. As a leader on the trip, I help plan the trip itself, as well as fund raisers leading up to it; I lead small-group discussions, provide general care and support to the rest of the team, and work with students and adults to teach them construction methods. Additionally, I engage personally with the students and other adults, i.e. we have fun together! I value the friendships I've made through this experience and can honestly say this experience shifted my life in a new direction, towards service, relationship-building, and community-strengthening.
