Druids is an honorary society for juniors who exhibit outstanding scholarship, leadership,    character and participation in student activities. Availability of applications is announced early spring in the Oregon Daily Emerald. Membership is limited to approximately 25 students.

The history of the Druids began in London, England in 1781. The original Druids were one of the first Celtic societies to form a social union that went beyond that of a tribe primarily concerned with only food and shelter. The ancient Druid was interested in life's spiritual and intellectual dimensions. Druids were often known as astronomers, advisors to the king, physicians and wizards. This elite group worshipped oak trees and ceremoniously used the mistletoe found growing on its limbs. In the eighteenth century, a new society in England took the name of the Druids, shed the ancient religion and devoted themselves to philanthropic works.

This Ancient Order of Druids is our model, and we have sought to retain the central ideal to realize that the scope and scale of human accomplishment can be broadened through an interdependent and unified organization. Originally a junior men's honorary of no more than seven active members, Druids has expanded over the years to include up to thirty members of both sexes. Selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership and sincere dedication to service in the community, Druid members have been active at the University of Oregon since 1974.
