Want a first hand look at local, organic food culture? Join 15 incoming freshmen for Project Tomato, a four-day pre-orientation trip focused on sustainable agriculture. This September, bike to local farms, community gardens and the UO's Urban Farm. Join in the harvest and take part in an exciting food preservation project on campus. Get a foot in the door of the sustainability movement as you meet future classmates and explore the Willamette Valley. Spend two nights on a farm and two nights in the UO residence halls.
Day One:
- 9:30 am Pre-trip bike outfitting at OP Barn (only for those who need to borrow a bike)
- 10:30am: Meet at UO campus for lunch, introductions and trip overview
- Food Handler's permit test
- Bike to River Bend farm with van support to transport gear
- Cook dinner together
- Evening presentation on sustainable living
- Camp at River Bend farm
Day Two:
- Biking farm tour to Slo-Farm, Hideaway Hills Farm
- Workshops and harvesting on farms
- Dinner, music and camping at River Bend farm
Day Three:
- Bike back to UO campus
- Urban bike tour: Springfield Youth Garden, Riverhouse Compost/Demonstration Garden, & Community Garden on the river path
- Move into residence hall and spend the night in hall
Day Four:
- Group will split up to tour Urban Farm and to transform tomatoes into pizza sauce for winter.
- Trip to Farmers Market
- Movie and popcorn in residence hall
- Stay in residence hall or return home
