Internships & Openings

In February, 2008, Patrick and Stephanie Kilkenny generously donated $250,000 to establish the Kilkenny Service and Leadership Fund. The fund supported the creation of the Student Service Grant program, which provides multiple grants of up to $1,000 to help students participate in hands-on educational projects. The program allows students learn and develop intellectually through the combination of traditional classroom work and deliberately organized community service. Students reflect upon their experiences in the community and integrate what they learn into their academic courses, using the service component as another text. In the end, the students learn from real-life experiences, which enhance their understanding and make their course work more real and personal. At the same time, the students meet a critical need in the community, so a reciprocal exchange of giving, receiving, understanding and learning takes place between the University and the community.
Patrick and Stephanie's thoughts on Service and Leadership…
Why is service important to you?
We have been extremely lucky in our lives. Our families are healthy and we have had some financial success. It is important to both of us to support those in our community who are less fortunate.
Why is it important for UO students to serve in our community?
Community service is a great learning experience for everyone involved. It is one of the true win-win situations in life.
What are the two or three most important lessons you would like to share with future leaders?
Make mistakes and learn from them. Be humble in your successes. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you and listen to them.
Who is/was your mentor or role model? How did their guidance and encouragement shape and influence your life and who you have become?
Our parents are our heroes and our biggest fans. Bob Kilkenny has always helped others in his community. Vesta Kilkenny has a work ethic that is an inspiration. John Hicks has been a public servant all his life. Barbara Jones lives everyday by the motto “I just want everyone to be happy.”
What is your most interesting/memorable moment at the University of Oregon?
Stephanie: The first time I ever visited the University of Oregon was for a football game and a dedication of Pape Field, Kilkenny Fields and the Moshofsky Center. I stood on the field in Autzen Stadium next to honorary captains Pat Kilkenny, Randy & Susie Pape and Ed & Elaine Moshofsky and was in awe of their love of Oregon and their philanthropic spirits.
Patrick: The day of the press conference announcing that I would be serving as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics was surreal. Never in a million years would I have imagined I would be in such a position. I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve the University of Oregon in this capacity.
